As the Special Assistant to the Chancellor
for Campus Events, Jane Lee Watson is responsible
for major University events such as the four
annual Commencement ceremonies, building dedications
and ground-breakings, award ceremonies, memorial
services, anniversary and retirement celebrations,
and a wide variety of other business and social
functions hosted by the Chancellor. She also oversees
the two community fund-raising campaigns that
are conducted annually on campus – the State
Employees Combined Campaign, and the Arts and
Science Council Campaign. Her work also includes
projects related to campus exhibits, portraits,
plaques, artwork, outdoor sculptures, signage,
and special commemorative items.
She attended Wake Forest University
and the University of Denver and was graduated
from The University of North Carolina at Chapel
Hill where she earned a Bachelor’s of Arts
degree in Journalism. She began her career as
a reporter and editor at The Charlotte News and
later at The Charlotte Observer. She then joined
Price-McNabb ad agency in Asheville as a public
relations account executive. She served as Director
of Special Events at UNC Chapel Hill before returning
to the Charlotte area as Special Events Assistant
to the President at Winthrop University. She came
to UNC Charlotte as the Chancellor’s special
assistant for events in 1990.
She is involved with the Civic-by-Design Forum
and the Charlotte chapter of The Institute of
Classical Architecture and a member of the North
Carolina Downtown Development Association, Preservation
North Carolina, the National Trust for Historic
Preservation, and the Carolina Farm Stewardship
Association. |
